Construction Underway on University of Michigan Health’s Ypsilanti Health Center

October 24th, 2023

Ypsilanti, MI – Exciting developments are underway as construction commences on the highly anticipated relocation and expansion of Ypsilanti Health Center, a University of Michigan Health ambulatory care facility to be located within the downtown Ypsilanti building recently purchased by Michigan Innovation Headquarters (MI-HQ).  Formerly the Eastern Michigan University College of Business building, the adaptive reuse project will house MI-HQ’s co-cooperative entrepreneur community alongside comprehensive primary care, specialty care, diagnostic and treatment services offered to the Ypsilanti community by University of Michigan Health.

MI-HQ Founder Mark Smith, the catalyst for this project, recognized the pressing need for both economic and social impact in Ypsilanti. “While MI-HQ’s focus is on innovation and economic impact, University of Michigan Health’s interests include improving the health status of the community, while also addressing health equity and socio-economic disparitiesacross the Ypsilanti area  community,” said Smith. “The combination has the potential to be immensely impactful for Ypsilanti’s downtown with an amazing history.”

The Ypsilanti community has responded positively to the project, which they believe will further catalyze the exciting transformation and growth taking place in the area.

“We believe that investing in both healthcare and innovation is investing in the well-being and future of our community,” expressed Ypsilanti’s Interim City Manager, Andrew Hellenga. “This collaborative effort will not only benefit individuals personally but pave the way for broader opportunities and a stronger, more prosperous Ypsilanti.”

Announced in December, MI-HQ and the University of Michigan Health have garnered widespread attention for their commitment to delivering top-notch healthcare facilities and services to residents in the region. The project is managed by the Michigan-based construction managers Cunningham-Limp (C-L) and designed by the distinguished architects at Hobbs+Black. The project is set to be completed by the fall of 2024.  .

Alex Dunne, the Project Manager at Cunningham-Limp, expressed excitement about participating in the transformative project. Stating, “The potential impact of this project is really starting to sink in for our team.  We have been active in Washtenaw County for a long time, but following Mark’s lead and having a chance to make this kind of impact in downtown Ypsilanti is highly motivating.  We know it’s just the start of great things to come to downtown Ypsi and the surrounding area.   We hope visitors will feel the excitement and passion that went into building this place as soon as they walk in. Our team has and will continue to put a lot of heart and gratitude into this project because of its positive impact on the community.”
